This purpose of this study was to design a self-compassion enhancement intervention using presentation video, and to test the effect of this intervention on public speaking anxiety. Participants were 54 college students with high levels of public speaking anxiety who were assigned to a self-compassion intervention group or a wait list control group. Measures of pre- and post-social anxiety, acceptance behavior, positive emotion and heart rate were analyzed. Results indicated significant differences in public speaking anxiety, self-compassion, social anxiety-acceptance behavior, positive emotion, and heart rate between the intervention and control groups. Next, a repeated measures analysis was performed, indicating the mediating effects of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness (sub-variables of self-compassion). The positive intervention effects on anxiety, self-compassion, and positive emotion were maintained at three-week post-termination follow-up. The significance, implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
